Because this course fulfills the University Writing Instruction in the Disciplines (WID) requirement for History majors, one of our emphases during the semester will be the improvement of your writing through critique and revision, culminating in the completion of a research paper on a topic of your selection related to the history of witchcraft (2, 4, 5). During the semester you will learn how to formulate and refine research questions; to locate, read, evaluate, and use both primary and secondary sources for material relevant to your research questions; and to draw your own conclusions from those sources. (5) You will also learn how to improve your writing skills through multiple drafts and revisions of your own writing and to critique the scholarship of others, both published academics and your peers. Because this course is a seminar, it depends on the active participation of all students each class session. Your attendance is mandatory, and your involvement in class activities and discussions is also required. Your verbal comments need to reflect your completion of reading assignments as well as your ability to express insightful conclusions based on analysis of reading and research. Your written work needs to reflect your understanding of the research and writing methodologies discussed in this class. Please note: You need to *earn* the part of your grade that comes from class attendance and participation; simply showing up each week does not guarantee a passing grade. The success of this seminar will be determined by your level of energy and effort, so make the commitment to be in class for every session and to be prepared to make quality contributions. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Students will 1) learn critical thinking skills through the analysis of primary and secondary sources relating to the topic of the history of witchcraft, 2) learn how to express their ideas effectively and in proper format through class participation and a variety of writing assignments, 3) learn to evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, and contributions of available scholarship, and 4) learn to create a paper of significant length that draws independent conclusions based on the conduct of historical research. PREREQUISITES: History major; HIST 105, 106, 125, and 201; at least two upper-division History courses; ENG 280; junior or senior standing; and permission of department adviser. If you have not met all of these prerequisites, you will be dropped from the course. COURSE ASSIGNMENTS AND GRADING: A large portion of your course grade (20%) will be determined by your presence and participation in weekly course sessions, so attending class is obviously imperative. All unexcused absences will reduce your semester grade, so be in class, be alert (no sleeping, reading the paper, text messaging, doing homework, or other activities that take your attention away from class), and make contributions to class activities. Participation means asking questions, completing all assigned reading and homework assignments, keeping up with ǿ޴ýappOnline (see below), bringing the required books ((4) bring Turabian to each class session as a reference guide), showing interest in the work of your peers, and demonstrating an interest in course material. This course is about research and writing, but it is also about the process of research and writing, so you need to be in class to participate in and complete that process. ***Missing nine or more class sessions will result in a failing grade for the course.*** (2, 3) Your major written assignment for this course is a research paper on a topic related to the history of witchcraft. At various points during the semester, you will be submitting drafts and revisions of materials related to your research and writing process (your topic proposal, research questions, annotated bibliography, endnotes/footnotes, notes on your primary and secondary sources, outlines, thesis statement, introduction, quotations); these preliminary assignments will comprise 15% of your course grade. Your completed paper (fifteen pages of text in length, plus notes, bibliography, and title page) is due at the start of class on Monday, April 16th and is worth 20% of your semester grade. The revised paper (maximum twenty pages of text) is due at the start of class on Monday, April 30th and is worth 10% of your semester grade. (5) An important part of the research and writing process involves constructive, professional critique for and from ones peers. You will be providing such a critique for a paper written by one of your colleagues in the class. That critique, three pages in length in addition to your written comments on the paper itself, will account for 5% of your grade. Finally, the final week of the regular semester will be devoted to oral presentations of your research, worth 10% of your semester grade, during which time you will teach your research to your classmates in the form of a professional presentation and answer questions about your methods and findings. The assignments associated with the research paper thus constitute 60% of your semester grade. (7) The remainder of your grade in the course will be derived from a series of essays and analyses based on the course texts that you will write during the first portion of the semester. These assignments, listed on the schedule below and described in more detail in handouts provided in class, are worth the remaining 20% of your grade. The semester breakdown is as follows: Attendance/Class participation @20% Preliminary writing assignments and in-class exercises @20% Research paper and related exercises @60% 100% Semester grades will make use of the plus/minus system and be given on the following scale: 90-92=A- 93-100=A 80-82=B- 83-86=B 87-89=B+ 70-72=C- 73-76=C 77-79=C+ 60-62=D- 63-66=D 67-69=D+ 59 and below=F REQUIRED TEXTS (for purchase at the University Union Bookstore and Chapmans): Sharpe, James.
