Tarrant III, Kathy Barclay, Richard Ness, Debra Allwardt, Kevin Hall Student Member: Jaime E. Kieltyka Ex-officio: Alice Robertson, Neil Baird Committee Activities, 2010-2011 At a series of six meetings during the academic year (one per month save December, January and May), the WID Committee completed a variety of tasks, as described in the WID Policies and Procedures document. a. To recommend to the Faculty Senate the approval and disapproval of all new WID courses. b. To recommend to the Faculty Senate the approval and disapproval of all significant changes in the WID requirements of individual majors. The committees primary duty is to recommend the approval and disapproval of all new WID and online BGS writing courses. The committee considered only one new online BGS writing course and, after appropriate modifications, recommended it to the Senate for approval: Women Studies 355, Introduction to Feminist Theory. c. To conduct periodic reviews of all WID courses to assure compliance with the principles and practices of the Writing Instruction in the Disciplines Graduation Requirement. & f. To secure periodic feedback from students, faculty, alumni, and employers concerning the implementation and effects of the Writing Instruction in the Discipline graduation requirement. This years WID committee primarily focused on the issue of reviewing the manner in which the WID graduation requirement is being implemented, and then determining the appropriate feedback and guidance to give to faculty, departments and the administration. In the previous year, the WID committee developed a survey for all faculty members teaching WID and BGS writing courses in the 2009-2010 academic year. In addition, the committee initiated a survey of all departments to obtain a database of syllabi and WID instructors, as well as to inquire about student feedback on their WID offerings. This survey was finally completed in the fall of 2010. Through these surveys, the committee was able to identify a number of items related to the WID guidelines that seemed to require some intervention on the part of the WID committee. A statement to be included in the syllabus of every WID and online BGS writing course was developed: For WID courses: This course has been designated to meet the Writing Instruction in the Disciplines (WID) graduation requirement. WID courses provide instruction in the processes and formats for the writing content and style needed to be an effective professional in a students chosen field. For online BGS writing courses: This course has been designated to meet the Writing Instruction in the Disciplines (WID) graduation requirement for BGS majors. Online BGS writing courses provide instruction in the processes and formats for the writing content and style needed to be an effective professional in a students chosen field. A number of letters were sent out to individual departments and copied to the Faculty Senate Chair and to the Registrars Office to point out some discrepancies in the catalog descriptions of the WID major requirement and the approved WID courses offered by the departments. A letter was sent to the Registrars Office regarding some discrepancies between the courses identified as WID in the WARD reports and those that are approved. A number of letters were sent out to individual departments and copied to the Faculty Senate Chair that pointed out some aspects of the WID guidelines that were not being met by the departments or their faculty. These dealt primarily with the weight given to the process of writing development through grades, assignments offering students the chance to revise their work, assignments given to students throughout the semester and the problem of overenrollment. The intent of the letter was NOT to threaten the departments, but simply to remind the chairs and faculty of the intent of the WID requirement and the suggested guidelines for it. d. To maintain a list of all current instructors of WID courses. & e. To monitor course enrollment in WID courses. The committee used data from UCSS, the department chairs and the 2010-2011 ǿ޴ýapp Catalog to update the list of current WID instructors, WID courses being offered, and to monitor enrollment data in WID courses. The updated lists of faculty and courses are available on the WID website at HYPERLINK "http://www.wiu.edu/wid" http://www.wiu.edu/wid. The following courses were found to be overenrolled (having enrollment at or above 28 students per instructor) in the 2010-2011 academic year: Spring 2011 FCS 490, S. Creasey, 34 enrolled MUS 391, A. Werling, 29 enrolled KIN 444, C. McMillan, 34 enrolled Fall 2010 ACCT 451, W. Aguir, 28 enrolled SW 313, D. Allwardt, 29 enrolled RDG 383, S. Massey, 30 enrolled LEJA 440, T. Lough, 30 enrolled COMM 410, N. Miczo, 28 enrolled g. To sponsor one or more faculty development activity each year to improve Writing Instruction in the Disciplines courses. The 2009-2010 surveys indicated that very few of the faculty listened to the podcasts developed by the committee in the past two years. The committee has begun preliminary discussions with the Library and Honors College to sponsor a student journal focusing on examples of professional writing produced by students in WID courses. The idea would be to engage both faculty and students in the process of submitting works for publication in the journal, with the goal of raising campus awareness of the WID graduation requirement and the importance of high quality writing in general.
