The committees primary duty is to recommend the approval and disapproval of all new WID and online BGS writing courses. The committee considered five new WID courses: German 326 (Conversation and Composition II), Spanish 320 (Spanish for Heritage Speakers), Economics 350 (Economics of Poverty and Discrimination), Fire Services 485 (Political and Legal Foundations), and Special Education 370 (Assessment). The committee considered one new BGS course: Economics 351 (Global Economic Poverty Issues). Additionally, the committee considered changes to one existing WID course: Special Education 400 (Planning for Instruction). After appropriate modifications, these courses were recommended to the Faculty Senate for approval. To recommend to the Faculty Senate the approval and disapproval of all significant changes in the WID requirements of individual majors. The committee considered a request by the Department of Curriculum and Instruction to add Special Education 370 as a second component of the WID requirement for special education majors. This course was recommended to Faculty Senate for approval. To conduct periodic reviews of all WID courses to assure compliance with the principles and practices of the Writing Instruction in the Disciplines Graduation Requirement. After a comprehensive review of all WID courses two years ago and extensive review of WID guidelines with seven departments last year, we did not conduct further review of WID compliance this year. To maintain a list of all current instructors of WID courses. The committee used data from UTech, the department chairs and the 2012-2013 ǿ޴ýapp Undergraduate Catalog to update the list of current WID instructors, WID courses being offered, and to monitor enrollment data in WID courses. The updated lists of faculty and courses are available on the WID website at HYPERLINK "http://www.wiu.edu/wid" http://www.wiu.edu/wid. The committee also sent WID information/guidelines to all WID instructors prior to both fall and spring semesters. To monitor course enrollment in WID courses. The following courses were found to be overenrolled (having enrollment at or above 28 students per instructor) in the 2012-2013 academic year: Fall 2012 FCS 490, S. Boston, Enrollment of 32 Spring 2012 HS 370, J. Johnson, Enrollment of 29 FCS 490, M. Noh, Enrollment of 28 Department chairs were emailed prior to the beginning of fall and spring semesters by the WID chair regarding courses exceeding WID caps, and most were corrected before the semester began. To secure periodic feedback from students, faculty, alumni, and employers concerning the implementation and effects of the Writing Instruction in the Discipline graduation requirement. This year the WID Committee participated in a full review of the ǿ޴ýapp Writing Program. As part of that review, three members of the WID Committee met with the review team in a discussion of the Writing Instruction in the Disciplines component of the Writing Program. The review team subsequently submitted their report and recommendations for Writing Program revisions, which included a recommendation for a national search for a Director of Writing Across the Curriculum. To sponsor one or more faculty development activity each year to improve Writing Instruction in the Disciplines courses. This year there were a number of writing workshops presented through CITR. These workshops included one WID instructional session entitled Designing Effective WID Courses. Other workshops involved best practices for commenting on and assessing writing as well as teaching for transfer in the major. Additionally, Neil Baird and Bradley Dilger presented their research on writing transfer in the major to the ǿ޴ýapp community. Over the past two years the WID Committee has been discussing starting a multidisciplinary student journal focusing on examples of professional writing produced by students in WID courses. The idea is to engage both faculty and students in the process of submitting works for publication in the journal, with the goal of raising campus awareness of the WID graduation requirement and the importance of high quality writing in general. This year the WID Chair met with Bill Thompson and Mahrya Carncross from the University Libraries, and they acquired Library support for housing the journal (i.e., web space and staff support for the publication). In another meeting with the Faculty Senate Executive Committee and Provost Hawkinson, Jim Rabchuk was appointed Interim Managing Editor of the journal. The first call for papers was distributed in the Spring 2013 semester. To perform such other duties as designated by the Faculty Senate. This year there were several WID policy changes. The WID committee bylaws were changed to reflect committee membership qualifications from Voting members must be (or have been) instructors in WID courses to Preference will be given to faculty who are teaching or have taught WID courses. The reasoning behind this change involves the limited pool of current and former WID instructors from which to select new committee members. The WID committee bylaws were changed to include the student member as a full voting member. This brings the WID committee in line with the policies of all the other Faculty Senate committees. The WID committee policy was changed to include approval and disapproval of BGS online writing designation in addition to that of WID courses. A new form for the BGS Online Writing designation was created and approved. This form makes it more clear that the requested designation is BGS online writing rather than WID. Also, the questions were modified to be more appropriate to this type of course proposal. The existing WID designation form was updated to include number of semester hours for the proposed course. It also includes the WID syllabus statement which should be in all WID syllabi. At their November 13, 2012 meeting, Faculty Senate Executive Committee requested the WID Committee to consider amending its bylaws to take responsibility for the [WID] journal.... Therefore, during the Spring 2013 semester the WID Committee discussed this matter at length in terms of established protocol for existing advisory boards of this type. The committee will finalize a proposal for its role in the oversight of the WID journal in the upcoming year. During the 2012-13 academic year, a WID subcommittee was formed with the charge of reviewing the existing WID Guidelines. In discussions of WID course applications over the past few years, the committee became aware that the current guidelines do not reflect much of a different emphasis than regular writing courses. The subcommittee sought to encourage more thoughtful consideration of WID courses, their structure, and their place in a particular department as well as give WID instructors more ownership of their courses. The subcommittee produced updated WID Guidelines, which were approved by the WID Committee at the end of the spring semester and will be recommended for Faculty Senate approval at the beginning of the 2013-14 academic year. The WID web site continues to be updated to improve access to and dissemination of information about the WID program.
