Ex-officio: Magdelyn Helwig, Neil Baird Summary The 2015-2016 WID Committee met 14 times (6 in the fall, 8 in the spring) over the course of the year. A major focus of the committee for this year was to begin a formal review of existing WID courses. A total of 12 courses, representing 5 departments, were successfully reviewed. The committee also conducted 5 CITR workshops over the course of the year. Activities A. To recommend to the Faculty Senate the approval and disapproval of all new WID courses. No new courses were submitted. B. To recommend to the Faculty Senate the approval and disapproval of all significant changes in the WID requirements for individual majors. No significant changes were submitted. C. To conduct periodic reviews of all WID courses to assure compliance with the principles and practices of the Writing Instruction in the Disciplines graduation requirement. The most significant activity undertaken by the committee was to begin a review of all existing WID courses. Given changes in the guidelines and philosophy of writing instruction, it was decided that departments (contacted via the department chair) would be asked to complete the current WID form for their existing courses, while emphasizing that no existing courses were at risk of being eliminated. It was hoped that completing the new form would prod departments to engage the issue of writing instruction in their WID courses (i.e., how is discipline-specific writing being taught as opposed to how are a checklist of writing parameters being implemented). In the fall, the committee successfully completed reviews of two courses: ECON350 and BCOM320. Both of these were courses that had been volunteered from the previous year. Early in the spring semester, the committee decided to begin the review formally by starting with the College of Arts and Sciences, and that departments would be contacted in waves. Emails were sent out to the following departments in the first wave: African-American Studies, Biological Sciences, English, Foreign Languages and Literatures, and Geography. Over the course of the semester, 4 courses from Foreign Languages and Literatures (FR326, GER326, SPAN320, SPAN326), 1 course from Geography (GEOG405), and 5 courses from Biological Sciences (BIOL430, BIOL482, BOT430, BOT451, ZOOL430) were successfully reviewed. Late in the Spring, another wave of departments was contacted, potentially providing time for them to submit courses for review early in the Fall 2016 semester. D. To maintain a list of all current instructors of WID courses. The WID committee continued to maintain a list of current WID instructors. As part of the review process, the committee has also been reviewing current WID courses. Currently, there seems to be no official procedure for a department to remove the WID designation from a course. This is an issue the committee will take up in the future. E. To monitor course enrollment in WID courses. In the Fall 2015 semester, there were 2 courses (ARTH394 and RDG383) that were overenrolled. In the Spring 2015 semester, there were 4 courses (COMM410, NUTR408, and 2 sections of SW316) that were overenrolled. In line with the over-enrollment policy adopted in December 2014, the chair sent an email to department chairs of all over-enrolled courses. In the Fall, the instructor of the RDG course was given an additional .24 workload to compensate for over-enrollment. In the Spring, the instructor of the NUTR408 course received ACEs in accordance with the 25:1 ratio. The chair delivered an over-enrollment report to the Faculty Senate in both semesters. Following the presentation of the report in the Spring, the committee met with Christopher Pynes, Chair of Faculty Senate, and Russell Morgan, Interim Associate Provost for Budget, Planning and Personnel, to discuss the over-enrollment policy. Two points came out of that discussion. First, notification from WID regarding over-enrolled courses should be expanded beyond department chairs to also include deans, the Budget, Planning, and Personnel office, and the associate provost. Second, the WIDs policies and procedures document should be revised to include a clear set of statements about the procedure that occurs when a course is over-enrolled. This is a high priority task for the committee in the coming year. F. To secure periodic feedback from students, faculty, alumni, and employers concerning implementation and effects of the Writing Instruction in the Disciplines graduation requirement. In the 2015-2016 academic year, two primary forms of feedback were utilized. The CITR session held in the Fall semester was specifically designed to foster discussion between the WID committee and WID faculty. Feedback and input from that session was utilized to create a sequence of CITR sessions in the Spring. Additionally, as part of the review process, departments were invited to attend WID meetings after their courses had been reviewed. In the Spring, that happened twice. Dr. Gary Schmidt, Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, attended a meeting when the FLL courses were being reviewed. When the Biological Sciences courses were being discussed, the meeting was attended by Chairperson Dr. Charles Lydeard, as well as department members Shawn Meagher, Meshack Afitlhile, and Laura Barden-Gabbei. Some of that discussion centered on the review process itself and provided valuable feedback for the committee as it continues to review courses in the future. G. To sponsor one or more faculty development activities each year to improve Writing Instruction in the Disciplines courses. The committee conducted one CITR session during the Fall 2015 semester. In the Spring, Neil Baird developed a workshop series of 4 sessions that focused on specific parts of the writing instruction process. These included designing course objectives and assignments, teaching writing and assessing writing. H. To perform such other duties as designated by the Faculty Senate. The committee has continued to move forward with implementation of the WID Anthology. The idea behind the anthology is to provide opportunities to showcase exemplary student writing. The initial announcement was sent out in the fall semester. During the course of that semester, a query was made regarding prior Institutional Review Board approval for submissions involving collection of student data. The chair contacted the IRB and received notification from that office that any student research included in the Anthology would need to have prior IRB approval. The guidelines will be amended to reflect that stipulation. +-;`girt{}J M o u x : U g 7 < F d f p r { } T U V ӿؿظشجذذ؛ؗؿؓhEh`dhr5CJaJh&h|fthth4h| hg+hrhpU h hHhE hM,S hr6hrh$5CJ aJ hr5CJ aJ hF;5CJ aJ hF;hF;59+,-hist e f q r | } U V gdr$a$gdF;V W ,6L?R=>?npq-DEF[\ÿÿ𷳯𷧷ܷзÛhhz[UhTeh.h&~h*"h4h2h h@Khrhr5CJaJhpU hhhT"hxrhth6$oh*'h,h8DhQh_=>?&!'!!!####(.0<Epqr/ : %!'!k!m!n!)###### hrh&~h[hrhr5CJaJh@Kh&~h_hhhpU ,1h/ =!"#$% ^ 6866666662&6FVfv2(&6FVfv&6FVfv&6FVfv&6FVfv&6FVfv(8HXf~_HmH nH sH tH @`@ rNormalCJ_HaJmH sH tH DA D Default Paragraph FontRiR Table Normal4 l4a (k (No List PK![Content_Types].xmlN0EH-J@%ǎǢ|ș$زULTB l,3;rØJB+$G]7O٭V$ !)O^rC$y@/yH*񄴽)޵߻UDb`}"qۋJחX^)I`nEp)liV[]1M<OP6r=zgbIguSebORD۫qu gZo~ٺlAplxpT0+[}`jzAV2Fi@qv֬5\|ʜ̭NleXdsjcs7f W+Ն7`g ȘJj|h(KD- dXiJ؇(x$( :;˹!
