Minutes from the November 8, 2012 meeting were approved. Writing program review team visit: The review team from the Council of Writing Program Administrators visited ǿ޴ýapp a few weeks ago. Kelly, Blankenship, and Garrido met with them, as did students, TAs, writing faculty, CAS Dean. Baird reported that a program self-study had been sent to the team prior to visit. Report will be issued in 5-6 weeks. It is likely the team will recommend a WID director for continuity as well as resources aimed at helping faculty design WID courses. Baird & Dilger writing transfer study: Study recently presented on campus. Baird will send PPT to Kelly who will send out to committee. Writing event: Essential Skills/Essential Conversations (ESEC) will hold three workshops 2/22, 3/22, and 4/19 at 1 pm in the Sandburg Lounge around discussion of student writing. WID journal update: Jim Rabchuk sent out a letter announcing the establishment of the Journal of Disciplinary Writing at ǿ޴ýapp. Kelly provided this letter, along with the relevant minutes of the Faculty Senate meeting of January 22 where Rabchuk updated the Senate, to the committee. The Senate has requested that the WID committee amend its by-laws to reflect acceptance of oversight responsibilities for the journal. It is unclear what oversight entails (there is an editorial board) and there were differing opinions among committee members about what role the WID committee should play re: the journal. Accountability and advisory functions could be possible responsibilities. Hogg suggested inviting Rabchuk to the March WID meeting to provide clarification and Kelly agreed to follow up. Miretzky and Blankenship will do some research to learn more about how other organizations boards of directors function in relation to the organizations publications. The other journal-related issue had to do with Rabchuks invitation to graduate students to contribute articles. The committee feels that the journal should focus on publishing undergraduate work. Baird noted that graduate students have other outlets for publishing. We do not know how many 400G level WID courses are offered; Blankenship noted that if the number is small grad inclusion might seem less of a problem. A proposed motion to recommend the acceptance of only undergraduate work for the journal after the initial pilot year was tabled and will be revisited at the March WID meeting. Podcast update: Kelly has had difficulties with updating the audio podcasts on how to prepare syllabi and plan WID courses for the WID webpage. The preference is for two PPT slide shows with embedded audio but this is not working out. Kelly will ask Roger Runquist for assistance in addressing the problems. WID policies & procedures guidelines Sub-committee report: Baird reported that he shared the WID guidelines with the visiting evaluators. Implementation remains a likely problem due to resistance from some departments, limited leverage for enforcing requirements, and the need for a clear message from the Provosts office about expectations for compliance. Committee discussed inviting Provost Hawkinson to the April WID meeting to discuss these concerns further. The committee will plan to discuss implementation in March and support for faculty in April. Faculty Senate and amendments: Regarding faculty and student membership on WID committee, this committee has already approved changes to its policy re: priority will be given to faculty who have taught WID courses; no student member has been named yet. While Kelly preferred to go to the Senate later in the semester with all the changes to be approved, this is not feasible given the significant work that will need to be done with finalizing the guidelines and sorting out responsibility for the journal. Consequently, Kelly will put smaller amendments on the Senate agenda now and will return to the Senate later in the semester with remaining amendments. Committee adjourned at 4:40 PM.
