This was a special meeting of WID, to meet with Jim Rabchuk, editor of the Writing in the Disciplines journal being launched at ǿ޴ýapp this semester. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss and attempt to clarify the WID committees role and responsibilities regarding the journal. Background: Rabchuk noted that the WID policies and procedures call for some measure of the impact of the WID program on students. He also noted that there is some misunderstanding about what WID actually stands for and is meant to do. The journal is an attempt to provide examples of what WID is and encourage faculty and students to share strong papers with the campus community. Rabchuk did some research, with help from Bradley Dilger, on whether other such journals existed and found only one example at Cal State, Sacramento. He contacted them to learn more and essentially has built on their program, with submission criteria modified slightly; for example, submissions must be from a WID course. Faculty who have volunteered to help with editing responsibilities include Dilger, John Schafer and C. Suzanne Bailey from LEJA, Lea Monahan from Nursing (yet to confirm), and Brian Bellott from Chemistry. Mahrya Cairncross from the library is helping with hosting the journal and Catherine Drinka is helping with formatting and publishing. The journal will be online only. Kelly asked what Rabchuk saw as the WID committees charge. It remains unclear at this point how the committee could and should contribute and Rabchuk suggests that we give it a year to see how things play out before making any firm decisions. There is no formal structure yet regarding an editorial board, and individual faculty members will play the role of primary editor on individual submissions. It was agreed that it would be desirable for the journal to be used as a resource for WID classes. One possibility for the WID committee would be to assist in a search for foundation money or sponsorships for students to carry out their research and scholarship activities. Hogg raised a question that had come up at the February WID meeting about graduate submissions. Rabchuk clarified that he believed graduate student work, as long as it is from a WID course, should be included in the journal. Should graduate students become the primary source of submissions in the journals first year, this decision would be re-visited, but he does not see this becoming a problem. Kelly asked whether Rabchuk anticipated submissions being rejected. Rabchuk felt that because faculty would be self-selecting in terms of their involvement that they would tend to support stronger work, but he did not rule out the possibility. Baird asked about the evaluation process after the pilot year. Rabchuk does not yet know and suggested that perhaps WID instructors could be recruited to review submissions. Despite the differences in disciplinary knowledge and writing styles, it could be valuable for faculty from various disciplines to review papers in order to make sure the scholarship is accessible to a broad audience. Hogg asked about criteria for review and Rabchuk said there is not yet a formal process. Kelly suggested the College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Research Grants rubric as a starting point. Rabchuk will also follow up with his contact at Cal State to see what they do. Hogg asked whether submissions would be blind; Rabchuk does not think this is necessary. Baird suggested we consider an advisory rather than an oversight role for the WID committee, with one WID committee member serving as an ad hoc member of the editorial board. Rabchuk agreed this was a good idea and suggested WID include this in their by-laws. The committee adjourned at 1 PM.
