Kieltyka Ex-officio: Magdelyn Helwig, Neil Baird Committee Activities for 2011-2012 At a series of seven meetings during the academic year (one per month except January and May), the WID Committee completed a variety of tasks as described in the WID Policies and Procedures document: To recommend to the Faculty Senate the approval and disapproval of all new WID courses. The committees primary duty is to recommend the approval and disapproval of all new WID and online BGS writing courses. The committee considered two new WID courses: Art History 392 Medieval Art and Art History 397 African Americans in Art. After appropriate modifications, these courses were recommended to the Faculty Senate for approval. To recommend to the Faculty Senate the approval and disapproval of all significant changes in the WID requirements of individual majors. The committee approved a new WID designation for Social Work 333 Case Management in Social Work. Additionally, the committee approved a change of major for Accountancy which changed the WID course for that major. These changes were submitted to Faculty Senate for approval. To conduct periodic reviews of all WID courses to assure compliance with the principles and practices of the Writing Instruction in the Disciplines Graduation Requirement. The WID committee chair met with seven academic departments/chairs during the current academic year to discuss WID issues: Biology Dietetics, Fashion Merchandising, and Hospitality Foreign Languages Mathematics Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration Sociology/Anthropology Womens Studies To maintain a list of all current instructors of WID courses. The committee used data from UCSS, the department chairs and the 2011-2012 ǿ޴ýapp Undergraduate Catalog to update the list of current WID instructors, WID courses being offered, and to monitor enrollment data in WID courses. The updated lists of faculty and courses are available on the WID website at HYPERLINK "http://www.wiu.edu/wid" http://www.wiu.edu/wid. The committee also sent WID information/guidelines to all WID instructors prior to both fall and spring semesters. To monitor course enrollment in WID courses. The following courses were found to be overenrolled (having enrollment at or above 28 students per instructor) in the 2011-2012 academic year: Spring 2012 LEJA 440, T. Lough (68714), 28 enrolled LEJA 440, T. Lough (68715), 28 enrolled Kin 444, C. McMillan, 32 enrolled Fall 2011 Chem 401, N. Made Gowa, 28 enrolled Kin 477, I. Kim, 37 enrolled LEJA 440, T. Lough, 28 enrolled Department chairs were emailed prior to the beginning of fall and spring semesters by the WID chair regarding courses exceeding WID caps, and most were corrected before the semester began. To secure periodic feedback from students, faculty, alumni, and employers concerning the implementation and effects of the Writing Instruction in the Discipline graduation requirement. Background: Last year (2010-11 academic year), the WID committee conducted a comprehensive review of all WID syllabi and surveyed all WID instructors and department chairs to review the manner in which the WID graduation requirement is being implemented and to determine the appropriate guidance and feedback for faculty, departments, and administration. As a result of this review/survey, a WID/online BGS syllabus policy was developed and approved by Faculty Senate. The committee also sent letters to departments to point out some discrepancies in the catalog descriptions of the WID major requirement and the approved WID courses offered by the departments. Additionally, a letter was sent to the Registrars Office regarding some discrepancies between the courses identified as WID in the WARD reports and those that are approved. Finally, letters were sent out to individual departments pointing out some aspects of the WID guidelines that were not being met by the departments or their faculty. This years WID committee followed up with individual departments regarding compliance with WID guidelines by meeting with WID faculty, departments, and chairs as indicated in c. above. To sponsor one or more faculty development activity each year to improve Writing Instruction in the Disciplines courses. One WID instructional session was conducted through CITR by Rebekah Buchanan in December. Furthermore, the committee continued discussions with the Library and Honors College to sponsor a multidisciplinary student journal focusing on examples of professional writing produced by students in WID courses. The idea would be to engage both faculty and students in the process of submitting works for publication in the journal, with the goal of raising campus awareness of the WID graduation requirement and the importance of high quality writing in general. The Honors College has agreed to house the journal, and the committee will be organizing an editorial board for the journal next year. To perform such other duties as designated by the Faculty Senate. This year the WID committee was requested by Faculty Senate to perform two additional tasks: Write a description of the WID designation to be included in the ǿ޴ýapp Undergraduate Catalog. The committee drafted such a description, which, after minor revisions, was approved by the Senate and President Thomas. Change the WID committee bylaws. The Senate Nominating Committee requested that the WID bylaws be amended to change the current service requirement of faculty appointed to the WID committee. The current language stated that Voting members must be (or have been) instructors in WID courses. Because the pool of current and former WID instructors from which to select new committee members was limited, the following new language was proposed: Preference will be given to faculty who are teaching or have taught WID courses. The committee approved this amendment and it will be submitted to Faculty Senate for approval during Fall 2012. Lastly, the WID web site underwent a substantial update to bring it in line with the web sites of other Senate committees and to improve access to and dissemination of information about the WID program.
