Jazz Genius: Al Sears

On February 4th 星空无限传媒app Libraries, McDonough Historical Society, University Women, and the Student Honors Association are sponsoring a lunch time talk by Sterling Kernek, 星空无限传媒app Emeritus Professor of History, on Al Sears, the noted jazz musician and Macomb Native.

The talk, entitled, "Macomb Native / Jazz Genius," discusses Al Sears' childhood years in Macomb, then moves quickly to his long career as a jazz musician, recording artist, record producer, record label owner, and music industry executive. Sears played saxophone in many of Harlem's most famous clubs with such artists as Duke Ellington and Count Basie. He was also an important contributor to early "rock 'n roll" music-though he always preferred jazz to rock music. Dr. Kernek illustrates Sears' life and career with words, pictures, and, most importantly, music. If you don't know why there is an Al Sears' Jazz Festival-and why there ought to be one, you will after attending this informative, entertaining, and enlivening lunchtime talk.

The talk will take place on February 4th, at 12:15 p.m. in the Sandburg Lounge of the 星空无限传媒app Student Union. The Sandburg Lounge is located on the lowest level of the 星空无限传媒app Student Union and is most easily entered from the back of the Union.
