Just Hired! Through the experiences of local, regional, national and international students, ÐÇ¿ÕÎÞÏÞ´«Ã½app Illinois University has incredible alumni who are making an impact in the workforce. This series features students from around the world who are hired post-graduation.

MACOMB, IL - - Meet Emma Cortelyou, a graduate of ÐÇ¿ÕÎÞÏÞ´«Ã½app Illinois University's English M.A. program, who was hired as a staff writer with the United Church of God.

Cortelyou, a lifelong member of the Church, is now contributing behind the scenes as a fourth-generation Christian. In her role, she writes articles, refreshes existing content and proofreads materials, supporting communication efforts for the Church community.

Her path to the position began through volunteer work as a copyeditor for the Church's teen magazine. After several years of involvement, a team member reached out to her before her graduation to gauge her interest in a full-time writing and proofreading role. Following a series of interviews, Cortelyou was offered the position in January 2026.

During her time at ÐÇ¿ÕÎÞÏÞ´«Ã½app, Cortelyou said her coursework and hands-on experiences helped shape her skills and career direction.

"Without the classes at ÐÇ¿ÕÎÞÏÞ´«Ã½app, I don't think I would have really learned what I'm good at and more importantly, what I enjoy doing," Cortelyou said. "It was Dr. Amy Mossman's copyediting class that opened my eyes to my great love for editing and Dr. Ashley Beardsley's rhetorical criticism class that unlocked a great amount of my understanding about effective writing. And I can't forget my four years working at the University Writing Center. It was there that I gained valuable, hands-on experience helping other students hone their writing and in turn, honed my own as well."

Cortelyou looks forward to continuing her work creating meaningful content and supporting her Church community in her new role.
